How Often Can You Retake the TestDaF? The Naked Truth

You're sitting in front of your results sheet, and there's a TDN 3 where a 4 should be. The dream of studying in Germany suddenly feels miles away. The good news: your dream hasn't burst, it's just taking a detour.

Short Answer

You can retake the TestDaF as many times as you want. There's no official limit on attempts. Since university admission usually requires TDN 4 in all sections, you can theoretically take the exam on every available date until you reach your goal.

Why Repeating Alone Isn't a Strategy

I've seen students who took the test five times in a row and got the exact same result each time. Why? Because they hoped they'd "just get luckier" with the topic next time. Spoiler alert: that almost never happens. The TestDaF is extremely standardized. If your writing skills are stuck at a TDN 3 level, a "nice" topic won't save you to a 4.

In the exam, you have 60 minutes for the written expression. For the paper-based TestDaF, you need to describe a graphic and write an argumentation, with at least 250 words expected. For the digital TestDaF, there are even two writing tasks. Anyone who relies solely on luck here is wasting time and money. You need to understand that the grading is based on proficiency levels (TDN). You don't achieve a TDN 4 by chance, but through structure and precision.

Digital vs. Paper: A Tactical Switch?

I'm often asked if one should switch formats for a second attempt. That's a question of personality. For the paper-based TestDaF, you write one long, cohesive task. This requires endurance and a very clear structure from the beginning.

The digital TestDaF, on the other hand, distributes the workload across two tasks. Here, you type on the computer, which is already much more natural for many of you today. So, if you failed the first time due to handwriting or time management for the long text, the digital mode could be your salvation. But beware: you should practice typing beforehand so that it flows smoothly under time pressure. Before vs. After: How to Nail the TDN 4

Let's be honest: many fail not because of their German, but because of the structure. Here are three examples of how you can go from a borderline candidate to a sure pass.

Example 1: The Introduction (Paper-based TestDaF)

  • Weak (TDN 3): The graphic is about students. The topic is important for Germany and everyone is discussing it.
  • Strong (TDN 4+): The presented graphic illustrates the development of student numbers in Germany between 2010 and 2020. Given the shortage of skilled workers, this is a debate of high societal relevance.

Example 2: The Graphic Description

  • Weak (TDN 3): The line goes up first and then down a bit. The number is 50,000.
  • Strong (TDN 4+): The chart shows that the numbers initially increased continuously before experiencing a slight decline in the last quarter and stabilizing at approximately 50,000.

Example 3: The Argumentation (Digital TestDaF)

  • Weak (TDN 3): I think this is good because you learn more this way. Also, it's cheaper for everyone.
  • Strong (TDN 4+): A significant advantage of this measure is that learning efficiency is increased. Furthermore, implementing it can lead to cost savings in the long run, representing a considerable economic benefit.

Avoiding the Cost Trap

Every retake costs money and nerves. Before you register for the next date, look closely at your partial results. If you got a 3 in written expression, there's no point in just cramming vocabulary. You need to train the format.

For the paper-based TestDaF, you have 60 minutes for a complex task (graphic + argumentation). If you're too slow here, you'll miss the conclusion at the end – and that immediately lowers your grade. For the digital TestDaF, you need to be able to quickly summarize information from reading texts and graphics. Specifically train the skill you lacked, instead of just "trying again."

Can I retake only one part of the exam?

No, unfortunately, that's not possible. The TestDaF must always be taken as a complete exam, even if you only didn't achieve TDN 4 in one section (e.g., writing). All four sub-tests are mandatory and are graded anew at each exam date.

How long do I have to wait between attempts?

There is no official waiting period. You can theoretically register for any available exam date. However, since grading takes several weeks, it usually makes sense to wait for the results to analyze your weaknesses specifically.

Does the latest result always count?

No, you can choose which certificate to submit to the university. If you perform worse the second time, you can still use the first certificate – provided the results there are sufficient for your admission.

Is there a difference in recognition between digital and paper?

No, both formats lead to the official TestDaF certificate. Universities accept both versions equally for admission, as long as you achieve the required TDN levels (usually TDN 4 in all sections).
