Short Answer
| Exam | What counts as passing (benchmark) |
|---|---|
| TestDaF | No fixed point limit; result per section in TDN 3–5. Universities usually require TDN 4 in all four sections, some TDN 3. |
| Goethe C1 | Passed from 60 out of 100 points ("sufficient"). |
| telc C1 Hochschule | Around 60% needed. |
| DSH | DSH-1 from approx. 57%, DSH-2 from approx. 67%, DSH-3 from approx. 82%. Most degree programs require DSH-2. |
Important: These are benchmarks. The specific requirements of your university or institution are always decisive.
TestDaF: Levels instead of a passing score
With the TestDaF, you don't "pass" in the classic sense — you receive a proficiency level (TDN 3, 4, or 5) for each section. Whether that's sufficient is decided by your desired university. Details: TDN levels explained.
Goethe C1 & telc C1: the 60 percent mark
Both are considered passed from around 60%. We explain how this is distributed across the sections here: Goethe C1 passing score and telc C1: 60% per section.
DSH: the three levels
DSH-1, DSH-2, and DSH-3 represent increasing levels. Most degree programs require DSH-2, while some linguistically demanding ones may require DSH-3. More on this: DSH overview.

FAQ
Which TestDaF level do I need for my studies?
Most universities require TDN 4 in all four sections; some subjects accept TDN 3. Check the requirements of your specific degree program.
Which DSH level do I need?
Generally DSH-2. Some linguistically demanding degree programs require DSH-3. DSH-1 is not sufficient for most degree programs.
Are these limits the same everywhere?
Goethe and telc are standardized nationwide. The required TestDaF level and DSH requirement, however, are determined by the individual universities.
